WePlay AniMajor, the most popular Dota 2 Major by hours watched (35+ million hours) held by WePlay Esports, was nominated for the 43rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards. The final match, Evil Geniuses vs PSG.LGD, is competing in the “Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage” category along with the League of Legends Worlds 2021 Final, the Overwatch League 2021 Grand Finals, The International 10 Dota 2 Championship, and the Ultimate Madden Bowl Finale.

The anime-themed WePlay AniMajor was held in June 2021 in Kyiv, long before the russian federation invaded Ukraine. WePlay Esports Arena Kyiv hosted the Dota 2 Major tournament at the end of the second season of the Dota Pro Circuit. The arena welcomed the best esports teams from all around the world, and the organizers made sure that every viewer enjoyed the entertaining broadcast.

Sports Emmys, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), are prestigious international awards dedicated to recognizing excellence in sports television programming. Being listed in the “Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage” nomination means the final match of WePlay AniMajor, Evil Geniuses vs PSG.LGD, has made a great impression on the Emmys’ jury and all the esports community. This category aims to honor the expertise demonstrated when covering and presenting an organized championship or final event of a video gaming competition to the viewer.

The Chinese team PSG.LGD won WePlay AniMajor and defeated Evil Geniuses in the grand final with a 3:0 score.

“We at WePlay Esports are all grateful for being shortlisted for the Sports Emmy Awards this year. It’s an honor to stand beside such reputed organizations as Riot Games, Valve, EA Sports, and Blizzard. Moreover, we are proud to be the only non-publisher company in the “Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage” nomination.

However, unfortunately, we can’t fully enjoy this exciting moment as we should. As russia invaded Ukraine, everything we were dreaming about has changed. But in spite of everything, we keep moving, hoping for our imminent victory, and supporting Ukraine.

The WePlay Esports team has made a tremendous effort to host WePlay AniMajor in Ukraine and to make it as great as the viewers saw it through their screens. We had only 43 days to finalize the tournament concept, prepare the location, produce decorations, and make sure every team and talent are able to come to Kyiv. It was a truly challenging, but happy and exciting time.

I believe WePlay AniMajor has a good chance to win this nomination. Let’s see how it goes”,
shared Maksym Bilonogov, general producer and chief visionary officer at WePlay Esports.

The ceremony to announce the winners of the 43rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards will be held offline for the first time in three years on May 24, 2022, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.
