WePlay Esports Arena Los Angeles becomes home to the Dovzhenko League, a Ukrainian-American filmmaking community
4 min read
The Dovzhenko League was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 2023, as a platform for sharing ideas and spreading Ukrainian voices among the international creative community. WePlay Studios became part of the project, providing a venue for regular meetings and sessions for the local filmmaking community.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022, Los Angeles has become a haven for hundreds of Ukrainians, some of whom are talented in creative professions and content production. Out of a desire to help the new arrivals integrate into their local community and prove themselves as professionals, the Dovzhenko League, a Ukrainian-American filmmaking community, was created.
The Dovzhenko League is a networking platform and lecture hall within which representatives of the Ukrainian and American film industries have the opportunity to freely exchange experiences and ideas, as well as discuss new cooperation formats. The project was founded by Vlad Klimchuk, a Ukrainian-born director and writer who has lived in California for the past few years.
“Ukraine is not only about war but also about talented individuals who are valuable professionals on film sets and beyond. Our members are making fascinating movies and raising the standards for the American film industry with their talent, just like many other international talents in Hollywood,” shares Vlad Klimchuk, founder of the Dovzhenko League.
“I was recently asked to speak at a Dovzhenko League event and was honored to connect with such a thoughtful and engaging audience. I had a wonderful time meeting an inspirational collection of Ukrainian actors, directors, and producers. The Dovzhenko League is doing incredible work within the industry, creating a space and community in LA for Ukrainian filmmakers and creators to meet up and collaborate. I can’t wait to spend more time with them,” comments John Wynn, award-winning producer and director, producer of The Rising Hawk film.
The content production company of Ukrainian origin, WePlay Studios also became a part of the project, providing its own site — the WePlay Esports Arena Los Angeles. The WePlay Esports Arena Los Angeles opened its doors in June 2022 as a filming venue for the content of any degree of complexity. The Ukrainian WePlay team, who was abroad on February 24, 2022, is currently ensuring the arena’s operation.
“I think the WePlay stage was the best place for the Dovzhenko League’s very first Q&A. We are thankful to WePlay Studios for its hospitality and collaboration. To be honest, with all these amazing people working at the studio, it feels like home,” shares Vlad Klimchuk.
Today, over 100 people are part of the Dovzhenko League. Project meetings and educational sessions take place almost every week. To join the project, don't hesitate to get in touch with Vlad Klimchuk.
